Prof. Mahoney will discuss the development of programs and projects that create opportunities for students to get hands-on real-world experience but that also provide outputs that are of need to community partners. In this way, students became a force-multiplier for mission-based organizations and city agencies rather than a resource-drain.

Along with Batten MPP students Nate Daugherty and Pin-Hsuan "Katy" Lai, Prof. Mahoney will discuss how a grant writing project in her course, "Political Institutions and Policymaking," provided new and needed research on funding opportunities for local non-profits and public-private partnerships, drafted grant proposals, and ultimately landed a $20,000 grant for a prison re-entry program run by the NGO OAR to help ex-felons on the road to becoming responsible, engaged community members.
