University Hall
(Map F, Building 12 [D3])
University Hall was the home of U.Va.'s men's and women's basketball programs prior to the opening of John Paul Jones Arena in the summer of 2006. The Virginia men's basketball team played its home games in Memorial Gymnasium for 42 seasons before the construction of University Hall. The building was dedicated on Nov. 21, 1965, and the Cavaliers played their first game in University Hall against Kentucky on Dec. 4, 1965. The first event in University Hall was actually a concert by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra on Nov. 13, 1965. It was the first of many non-athletic events held in the building. Many former players returned for the final men's and women's regular season basketball games at University Hall near the end of the 2005-06 season. At that time, the seating capacity for basketball was 8,392. University Hall currently houses athletics department offices and locker rooms for many intercollegiate athletics teams. It continues to serve as a site for special events and as a practice facility for athletics teams.
