Ellen Fuller

Ellen Fuller
Ellen Fuller is an assistant professor of Sociology and Studies in Women and Gender. She received her Ph.D. in Social Sciences in Education (Sociology), with a focus on Japan, from Stanford University in 2002. She also holds an M.B.A. (1990) and an M.A. in International Studies - China Regional (1986) from the University of Washington. She speaks, reads, and writes both Chinese and Japanese. Professor Fuller's research interests include cultural comparisons of gender and work (Japan-U.S., East Asia), organizational culture in globalized contexts, and cross-cultural perceptions of meaning. Her dissertation investigates the effects gender and cultural differences have on employee perceptions of, and interactions with, institutional authority in a discrete transnational organization. She currently is working on an article that compares managerial Japanese men's and women's negotiation of the "ideal employee" model as they attempt to advance up the career ladder at a foreign firm in Japan, as well as one that explores the problems that arise when American multinational corporations attempt to transmit managerial development programs to East Asian women. Professor Fuller was named one of the Mead Honored Faculty 2002-03 at UVa for teaching and service to students, and also has been recognized by the Z Society. She teaches courses on East Asian women in comparative contexts, transnationalism, globalization, social movements, and capitalism and culture.
