Buckley is a doctoral student in the Department of Anthropology, University
of Virginia, with research interests in West Africa, Visual Anthropology,
Postcolonial Theory and Material Culture Studies. He is currently writing
his dissertation "Colonial Negatives: Photography in The Gambia, West Africa,
since Independence (1965)," focusing on how photographic practice in The
Gambia substantiates local experiences of historical change and of being
"in fashion" and living in the present.
