The Brown Family Cemetery is located behind a late twentieth century housing development. Presumably there was once an African-American neighborhood here, which included a family burial ground. The cemetery contains 51 visible graves (although there may be more unmarked depressions). The burials include several generations of Brown family members, including descendants of Benjamin and Ellen Brown (born in the ante-bellum period) and Albert and Ellen Brown (also born in the first half of the nineteenth century). Only six of the stones contain legible inscriptions, while three stones contain partially legible, hand-carved inscriptions in stone. The cemetery also contains an obelisk-style marker (stone #7) and several naturally rust-colored stones (stone #2, 11, 15, etc.). The burial ground is surrounded by a decayed wire fence and a dozen or more trees are distributed throughout the enclosed area and along the fence.

Look closely at stone #1, 26, and 35 and see if you can decipher the hand-carved inscription. Research in Albemarle County death records revealed that Edward Brown (1859-1949) and Polly Jones (1860-1937) buried several of their children in the cemetery, including Robert Daniel (1895-1966) and Edward J. (1892-1978). Gravestones #32 and 31 mark the burials of Robert and Edward, but neither Edward, Senior nor Polly have a legible marker. If you click on the large version of stone #35 (shown in a thumbnail above) see if you can decipher the numbers "1937" and the letter "P." This may be Polly's final resting place.
