St. Mark's Church

St. Mark's Baptist Church is on Route 60 West (the Lexington Turnpike) in Amherst County. The church was once called Fallen Rock. The church faces the road, but behind it lies an old cemetery, in use for over 100 years. The cemetery contains about 240 gravestones, scattered throughout a now wooded area, with few rows or alignments. There are occasional head and footstones, but otherwise it is difficult to determine any overarching organization. Most likely the cemetery is associated with generations of parishoners who belonged to the church. Only four of the stones contained legible inscriptions: Mary Crawford (died in 1916 at age 104); Mrs Mary Tucker (died in 1993 around 80 years old); Mr Thomas Cashwell (died in 2001 at age 24); and Aaron Crawford (died in 1963 at age 73).
The remaining stones are hand-carved fieldstones, but they lack inscriptions. More recently, the current owner of the property (and a nearby house) purchased white crosses to mark the entrance to the graveyard (the three crosses seen below) and added crosses to several of the unmarked gravestones. A photo of St Mark's Baptist Church is included as an inset in the photograph below.
