Support for Students

Financial Aid
Full financial support is offered to our graduate students that are in good academic standing including tuition, stipend, and health insurance. Financial aid to beginning graduate students may take the form of a teaching assistantship or a fellowship, most commonly the former. In addition to the stipends for the nine-month academic year, full financial support is available during the summer for graduate students in good standing. Duties required of teaching assistants normally total less than twelve hours per week of laboratory instruction, supervision, and consulting with students. Although teaching assistantships are available to students beyond the first year in graduate school, most students ultimately are supported from research grants or fellowships and devote full time to their research programs. Some teaching assistants are awarded supplementary fellowship support in recognition of their undergraduate records.

A number of research fellowships are available for graduate study, funded through private endowments or from University or State sources.

Housing
Although many of our graduate students prefer to live off campus, the University provides housing for both single and married graduate students. Single students may live in the Stadium Road (Dillard) complex at a cost of $2540 for a double room, or in the Copeley III apartments at a cost of $2570. These accommodations are available only for the nine-month session and alternative living arrangements must be made for the summer months. Contract meal plans are available for all registered students. Housing for married students is available at Copeley Hill and University Gardens. Copeley Hill has one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, and both furnished and unfurnished apartments are available. University Gardens provides unfurnished one- and two-bedroom apartments. Brochures, applications, and more information can be obtained from the Family and Faculty/Staff Housing Office in Page House, via e-mail at jaw9j@virginia.edu, or by calling (434)924-7030.

Career Services
University Career Services provides assistance to a diverse student body and recent alumni in implementing personal career or graduate/professional school admission goals. The office accomplishes this mission by: counseling, teaching, and advising students to encourage confident and independent action through the development of career management skills, and establishing and maintaining productive and cooperative relationships with employers, alumni, faculty, parents, and graduate/professional school admissions personnel.

Some of the programs administered through the University Career Services include Counseling Services, Special Programs and Services, and Job Search Programs and Services. University Career Services arranges on-grounds interviews with international, national, and local employers. During the past year, there were 373 companies that did on-grounds recruiting resulting in 8,000 interviews. In addition, there are numerous career fairs that bring additional employers to Virginia.
