Resources and Facilities
A number of departments, institutes
and centers contribute to the richness of intellectual life for developmental
biologists at the University of Virginia. In the College of Arts and Sciences,
the Dept. of Biology
has, in addition to its development group, strengths in related areas
of cell and molecular biology, evolution, genetics, neurobiology and plant
biology. A 10 minute walk across the University grounds links the College
and Medical School, where faculty from the
Cell Biology,
Microbiology,
Neurosciences and
Pediatrics Departments participate in the development training program.
Related programs in the medical center,
The Cancer Center,
The Cell Signaling Center and Child Health Research Center provide
important ancillary resources for developmental biology.
All of the departments listed
above discuss the many facilities available to students for conducting
their research, including the most modern equipment for experimentation
in all areas of developmental biology. In addition specialized University-wide
facilities enable students to carry out state-of-the-art work in highly
specialized areas, for example, the Biology Department houses an Advanced
Cellular Imaging Facility and the medical center
Biomolecular Research Facility and
Transgenic Mouse Core Facility.
