Recreational
Kayaking Primer
This four-hour clinic will teach the essentials of boat fitting,
control skills, paddle selection and techniques for maneuvering through
gently moving waterways. Ideal for new paddlers and boat owners. No roll
experience needed; no roll instruction provided.
Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking
The best way to start! This two-day course teaches the beginner how to
successfully maneuver a kayak in entry level whitewater. Spend day one
getting comfortable with the boat and learning paddle strokes. On day
two, you will get a chance to run class I and II whitewater on a local
river and try out your new skills!
Prerequisite: Previous participation in Roll Workshops is recommended.
Advanced-Beginner
Whitewater Kayaking
Get serious about paddling! Due to popular demand, this program is offered
for those seeking to refine and further develop their paddling skills
under the supervision of our trained instructors. There will be a three-hour
pre-trip meeting.
Prerequisite: Participation in the "Introduction" class or equivalent
experience. Previous participation in Roll Workshops is strongly recommended.
Eastern Shore Kayak
Trip
Imagine yourself sea kayaking around the Barrier Islands on Virginia’s
Eastern Shore with the coastal breeze on your face. This instructional
course includes two nights of camping and covers self-rescue, paddling
strokes, trip planning, chart and compass reading as well as tide and
wind gauging. Required equipment, food and transportation are provided.
Space is limited to six people, so sign up early.
Prerequisite: Recreational Kayak Primer or approved equivalent experience.
Kayak
Roll Workshops
Learn "the cornerstone of successful kayaking,” the Eskimo
Roll. Three two-hour sessions cover boat fitting, entries and exits. The
majority of the time is spent learning and perfecting the Eskimo Roll
via the "C to C" method.
Kayak
Roll Practice (not currently offered)
These two-hour sessions give participants the opportunity to practice
their roll technique and meet future paddling partners. Practice sessions
are supervised by our trained instructors. Note: These sessions do not
provide formal instruction in roll technique (see “Roll Workshops”).
Participants must have prior experience in a whitewater kayak.

IM-Rec Sports Outdoor Recreation will continue our collaboration with
on-Grounds student organizations to offer a series of outdoor trips and
activities specifically designed for first-year students. Field programs
in paddling, rock climbing, caving, hiking and fly-fishing will be coordinated
throughout the fall semester. In addition to meeting your classmates,
you will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains
and Shenandoah Valley while participating in a variety of outdoor recreation
activities designed to foster community and appreciation of the resources
available to you locally.
