University Transit Service (UTS)

Welcome to the University Transit Service (UTS) at the University of Virginia. UTS was established in 1972 and is dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and courteous transportation to our 3 million passengers annually. UTS operates throughout the calendar year, with a special focus on the academic year. There are MANY different bus routes that you may choose from to suit your needs, giving you the most flexibility and options. You can go almost anywhere around the University Grounds and the surrounding community aboard a UTS bus.

UTS Buses Run on Biodiesel Fuel

Tips for UTS Passengers:

  • For your safety, please use handrails while boarding the bus.
  • Use the front door of the bus to board, and the back door of the bus to exit.
  • When requesting a stop, please pull the stop request cord. Be ready for your stop and pull the cord to allow the driver ample time to stop.
  • When crossing the street near a bus, please cross behind the bus rather than in front. Buses have large blind spots.
  • In the interest of safety, please refrain from engaging in activities that could be distracting to the driver (flash photography, making loud noises/yelling, touching the driver to get his/her attention, etc.)
  • Please remain seated or hold on tightly to the railing/safety straps while on board the bus. As required by law, passengers are not permitted to stand forward of the standee line while the bus is in motion. Please keep entirely behind the line anytime the bus is not completely stopped at a UTS bus stop.
  • If you miss the bus, please do not chase after it or knock on the side of the bus while it is in motion as this may result in serious injury or may distract the driver from safely operating the vehicle. If you miss the bus, please utilize one of our conveniently placed Bus Finders or call 1-866-748-4227 (toll free) to find out when the next bus is arriving at your stop. The bus stop number will be a 5-digit number located on the back of the stop, or on the side or front of a sheltered stop.
  • If you have any questions about routes or schedules, ask your driver. They'll be happy to help!
