Parking Services for People With Disabilities

The University of Virginia and the Department of Parking & Transportation provides many special services for people with disabilities including accessible parking and Demand and Response Transportation (DART).

Accessible parking spaces are reserved for those possessing valid handicapped placards or license plates (provided by the Department of Motor Vehicles or the University of Virginia). Any use of the accessible spaces without the proper placard or license plate is prohibited. Individuals displaying a valid placard or license plate may use U.Va meters free of charge or park on Grounds in spaces marked for "service vehicles" found in many University lots. Download the Accessibility Parking Map (adobe required)
General use accessible spaces are clearly posted, and are located throughout University Grounds. Designated accessible spaces are posted throughout each U.Va parking garage, but the user is expected to pay the normal hourly fee.

Health System Parking for People with Disabilities

A request for close-in parking in the Health System parking areas due to a medical condition and/or disability requires the issuance of a parking permit for the specific Health System lot.  Employees must contact the Health System Parking Office (Messenger Mail:  Box 800799 or telephone: 434-924-5147) to request the forms required to initiate the approval and issuance of permits based on a medical need.   This permit is issued by the Department of Parking and Transportation once the application has been approved.  The cost of the permit is $5 less than the current monthly parking fees.  A permit is issued to provide parking in a Health System reserved lot in accordance with a physician's recommendation.  If an employee has a DMV issued decal for handicapped parking, a permit for a reserved lot in the Health System area is also required

Additionally, persons with permanent or temporary disability who hold a U.Va parking permit may submit requests to the Department of Parking & Transportation for special permits entitling them to reserved parking for their exclusive use. Employees may submit such requests with a letter from a physician. Students must submit such a request through the Department of Student Health.
