Critical Facilities Across the Suffolk District Road Network

An important factor in determining the best order to restore road segments with damaged equipment is the number of critical facilities a road segment can provide access to. Because it is easier to count the critical facilities using intersections, the team decided to use intersections in the analysis. The process of preparing for analysis involved several major steps:

The first step was to obtain map books and put them together to make larger maps. The map books were separated and reconstructed to form one large map on bulletin boards. This large-scale map makes it very easy to see the area, because it is densely populated. It is vital to the later parts of the project, because all of the roads and all of the critical facilities can be located on this map. Then intersections were identified on the maps and black pins were placed on them. Critical facilities were categorized according to their functions. They were also identified and marked with colored pins according to their category (each category had a certain color). After this, the intersections (the roads that make up them) and the number of critical facilities connected to them were put into spreadsheets. Finally, a method of calculating the importance of the intersections was implemented in the spreadsheets.
