U.Va. Alerts

U.Va. Alerts notifies registered users via text message when the University population faces imminent threat from a hazard. Since U.Va. Alerts requires a computing ID, only students and staff are eligible to register for accounts.

Once you create an account, you will be able to login and add an additional mobile phone number and up to six email addresses.

Parents can be added to student U.Va. Alerts accounts

Since U.Va. Alerts requires a computing ID, parents and non-University affiliated persons are not able to create an account; however, students can add parent contacts to their account. See the instructions below on adding an additional mobile phone number and email addresses to the account.

Prerequisites

  • Your mobile phone must be capable of receiving text messages and your mobile phone service plan must support receiving them. If you are unsure, please check with your mobile phone service provider.

  • You must have your mobile phone with you during signup. The registration process will require you to validate your account by entering a 4-digit verification code in the "Create New User Account" Web form. This 4-digit code will be sent to your mobile phone within seconds of creating an account.

  • U.Va. employees with phones on state contract must activate text messaging on their service plan.

Instructions to Create an Account

Step 1:
Your U.Va. NetBadge credentials are used to setup your U.Va. Alerts account. Complete the requested information on the "Create New User Account" Web form.

Step 2:
Within moments of clicking the CREATE ACCOUNT button, your mobile phone will receive a text message with a 4-digit number. Enter this number on the account creation Web page then click the VALIDATE button. After completing this step, your registration will become active immediately. If you do not receive the 4-digit number within moments of creating your account, contact your mobile phone service provider to determine whether or not you have text messaging enabled. If you are certain that you have text messaging enabled but are not receiving the 4-digit validation number, then email your mobile phone number and the name of your service provider to support@e2Campus.com. Indicate you want to register in the U.Va. Alerts system. An e2Campus technical support representative will assist you with the registration process.

Step 3:
Now that the account is activated, you can log into your account to add an additional mobile phone number and up to six email addresses to receive text messages.

Adding Additional Mobile Phone Numbers and Email Addresses

Once you have established your account you may also add an additional mobile phone number and up to six email addresses. Here's how:

  1. Go to the U.Va. Alerts login.
  2. On the Services page you will see a field for adding an additional mobile phone number and another field for adding email addresses. Remember that all the phone numbers and email addresses you submit will need to be validated. If you do not finish the validation process, you will not receive emergency text messages and email.

Validation

Once you have registered an additional phone number or email address you must validate the information.

If a parent, guardian, or significant other's phone or email is registered, work with them to complete the validation step. Here's how:

  1. Go to the U.Va. Alerts login.
  2. On the Services page you will see the status of the mobile phone numbers and email addresses you have submitted. If the status says Unvalidated, follow the instructions on the Web page to finish the validation process.
    • When you are validating a mobile phone, a 4-digit number is sent to that mobile phone in the form of a text message. You will need to have that mobile phone available so that you can type the 4-digit code into the Web form. Upon doing this the mobile phone number will be validated.
    • When you are validating an email address, a link is sent to that address. When the link in the email message is clicked, that email address will be validated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can get U.Va. Alerts?
The U.Va. Alerts service is for students, faculty and staff who will be affected directly by an emergency on the University Grounds and/or the proximate areas. Since U.Va. Alerts requires a computing ID, parents and non-University affiliated persons are not able to establish an account; however, students can add parent contacts to their account.

Why should I get U.Va. Alerts?

  • Text messaging is more reliable during emergency situations when communication systems may be overwhelmed with traffic. Text messages will often get through when phone calls won't.
  • Accurate information about impending or actual threats or emergencies can help you make good decisions to stay safe.

Will my mobile phone number be kept confidential?
Yes. U.Va. Alerts service mobile phone numbers are not shared or sold to any other systems or services.

How many U.Va. Alerts text messages will I receive?
The exact number of U.Va. Alerts messages is difficult to predict, but there should be very few. There will be occasional tests of the system, but the aim is to alert you only to emergency situations in which there is an imminent threat to public safety. While the delivery time is dependent on your carrier processing the message, you will most likely receive messages within seconds of transmission. If your mobile phone is turned off when a text message is sent, you will receive it after you turn your mobile phone on, but only if you do so within seven days from the original transmission.

What do I need to get U.Va. Alerts and how much does it cost?
All you need is a U.Va. NetBadge account and a mobile phone with text messaging capabilities. There is no charge to users for signing up. Individual mobile phone plans will apply normal charges for the text message.

Note: All landlines, most Tracfones and some pay-as-you-go phones will not register on the U.Va. Alerts system. This is a limitation of the phone providers.

What if I change my mobile phone service provider or my mobile phone number?
When you change mobile phone providers but keep your existing mobile number, it is considered "ported." Depending on the mobile phone provider, it may take up to 30 days for the U.Va. Alerts system to be updated. During the "ported" time period, you may not receive alerts because the alerts are sent to the old mobile provider, which may not forward them. You will find details on how to solve this problem and immediately register your new service provider when you login to review your account information.

If your mobile phone number changes, you will need to login to U.Va. Alerts and update your account information. From the Services page you can edit or delete existing phone numbers and email addresses.

How can I update my account?
Go to the U.Va. Alerts login and from the Services page, edit or delete existing phone numbers and email addresses.

What if I do not enter the 4-digit validation code?
If you do not enter the 4-digit validation code, an account is created but you will not receive alerts. To receive alerts, you must login and complete the validation process.

What if I do not receive the 4-digit validation code?
If you do not receive the 4-digit validation code, contact your mobile phone service provider to verify that text capability is activated on your plan. If you have verified that text capability is activated on your plan, then contact support@e2Campus.com and provide them with your mobile phone number and service provider. Indicate you want to register in the U.Va. Alerts system. An e2Campus technical support representative will assist you with the validation process.

How can I opt-out of U.Va. Alerts?
You can opt-out (discontinue) at any time just as quickly and easily as you signed up. Here's how:

  1. Go to the U.Va. Alerts login.
  2. Select the Groups tab.
  3. You will see "U.Va. Alerts Emergency Notification" as your active group. Click on Unsubscribe.

What will the U.Va. Alerts tell me?
A short text message will state the type of threat and indicate suggested action. For instance, in the case of a chemical spill you might get this message: "CHEMICAL SPILL ON GROUNDS. AVOID (LOCATION). DETAILS AT WWW.VIRGINIA.EDU." Because the messages must be brief, you will always be directed to go to the University's home page (www.virginia.edu) where additional details will be available.

An important reminder: The U.Va. Alerts text messaging service is just one of the methods the University will use to communicate emergency information. The best source of official information, such as high-level emergency details and schedule change information will be the University's home page at www.virginia.edu. Local television and radio stations should also be relied on in severe weather situations. Key staff and student leaders, such as the Resident Staff, will also be equipped to communicate directly with students. All available forms of communication will be used to convey needed information to the University community.

For assistance with validating a mobile phone number, email your mobile phone number and the name of your service provider to support@e2Campus.com. Indicate you want to register in the U.Va. Alerts system. For all other inquiries, please contact the U.Va. Help Desk.
