The purpose of the workshop is to identify basic and applied research needs and opportunities in corrosion that are relevant to the Yucca Mountain repository* project, that might be realized well after the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (USNRC's) initial construction-authorization licensing process. This research, if conducted, may (a) improve the technical basis of its safety case, and/or (b) improve the cost or schedule aspects of the design for the underground waste packages that are an important part of the overall repository engineering design. 15-20 scientists will be invited to deliberate on basic and applied science needs. Participation and attendance is by invitation only. The culmination of this workshop will be a scientific report published in the archival literature that identifies post-USNRC license approval generic research needs and opportunities in both basic and applied topic areas.
