Winter Storm and Potential Impact on ISC and IFC Recruitment

January 16th, 2013

At present, the National Weather Service is calling for snow accumulations tomorrow that range from a possible 6 – 10 inches. According to our colleagues with Emergency Preparedness, this is an unpredictable storm that continues to shift.  There is potential for bands of heavy snow, which could impact recruitment processes. We will continue to monitor the weather closely and will work to keep everyone posted. In the meantime, please note the following:

In the event of inclement weather, we will work with the IFC and ISC to amend the recruitment schedule so that rounds of recruitment can occur on the same day.  Rounds of recruitment may need to condensed, delayed, or otherwise altered in order to respond to the inclement weather and to preserve the recruitment process.

Cancelling any aspect of recruitment will be a measure of last resort and will be done in consultation with the appropriate Governing Council and University’s Office of Emergency Preparedness,  the Office of the Dean of Students, and other University offices as necessary.  A decision to cancel any aspect of recruitment will be largely based in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of University students.

Chapters must be equipped with a plan for snow removal, especially around sidewalks and walkways. A shovel, rock salt and other snow related equipment should be in the chapter’s possession for use if needed.

Any and all changes to the recruitment schedule will be communicated in 2 ways:

1)      Email. Chapter presidents and recruitment chairs will receive an email (sent to their UVA email account) that details any changes to the recruitment schedule. This email will be sent from a representative of the Office of the Dean of Students/Fraternity & Sorority Life. Chapter presidents are expected to communicate these changes to chapter members via any internal process that will allow for the quick dissemination of the information (listserv, phone call, text message).

2)      Fraternity & Sorority Life Website. Changes to the recruitment schedule will be posted to the “Announcements” section of the Fraternity & Sorority Life Website (http://www.virginia.edu/fsl). The FSL website will be shared with all potential new members involved in the recruitment process so that they are able to readily access information about the recruitment process and any changes due to inclement weather.

We look forward to working with you during the recruitment process.

Best Regards,

The Office of the Dean of Students/Fraternity & Sorority Life
