The Beginning

  • – 1819-

    -The University of Virginia is founded

  • -1852 –

    First fraternity at the University, Delta Kappa Epsilon

  • – 1868-

    -Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity founded in 31 West Range

  • -1869 –

    Kappa Sigma Fraternity founded in 46 East Lawn

  • – 1936-

    -The Inter-Fraternity Council is established

  • -1927 –

    The first women’s fraternity, Chi Omega, established

  • – 1954-

    -Faculty-Staff Committee on Fraternities created

  • -1972 –

    Undergraduate admissions fully enroll women

  • – 1973-

    -First African American fraternity and sororities at the University: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, and Delta Sigma Theta

  • -1974 –

    Faculty-Staff Committee on Fraternities changes name to the Committee on Fraternities and Sororities, reflecting advent of sorority community

  • – 1975-

    -The Inter-Sorority Council is established

  • -1987 –

    Committee on Fraternities and Sororities dissolved – Agreement for Contracted Independent Organizations created

    – Greek Coordinating Committee created

  • – 1991-

    -African American fraternities and sororities establish the Black Fraternal Council

  • -1999 –

    First Latina sorority at the University, Omega Phi Beta

    – Fraternity-Sorority Council is founded

    – First Asian interest sorority at the University, alpha Kappa Delta Phi

  • – 2000-

    -Task Force on Fraternities and Sororities “Fraternity Working Group” created – Multicultural Greek Council founded (formerly the Fraternity-Sorority Council) – First Latino fraternity founded, Lambda Upsilon Lambda

  • -2001 –

    Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life created

    – University Committee on Fraternities and Sororities created

  • – 2002-

    -First Asian American fraternity founded, Lambda Phi Epsilon

    – First independent fraternity founded, Phi Society

  • -First Multicultural sorority founded, Theta Nu Xi (December 7, 2002)
  • -2003

  • – 2005-

    -The National Pan-Hellenic Council is founded (formerly the Black Fraternal Council)

    – The Inter-Sorority Council formally affiliates with the National Panhellenic Conference
