New Jinitiator Roll-out August 27, 2007

Jinitiator 1.3.1.28 will be required to access the Integrated System, starting at 7:00 a.m. on August 27, 2007. Jinitiator 1.3.1.28 will download automatically and install on your PC (see caveats below) when you log on to the Integrated System. Old and new versions can co-exist. The new version may be installed and tested prior to that date. See below.

Synopsis: This version is signed. Re-setting IE security options should not be necessary. Users have XP Pop-up blocker and ActiveX blockers to contend with. Installation with Windows Administrator privileges is required.

Caveats: For best performance, set the following: (click link for details)
Set Integrated System site as allowed by pop-up blockers.
Add Integrated System site to Trusted Zone.
Adjust XP firewall as suggested by ITC Microsystems.

Sample Scenario: Windows XP SP2, Windows firewall on, Popup blocker on, all Internet Options Security set to Default, logged in with Windows administrative privileges, VPN on. Logged into the Oracle Applications(click here for test URL), UVA Printer Setup Specialist, clicked Register, popup "Did you notice the Information Bar?", OK. On the Information Bar, choose Install ActiveX Control, click Register again. Download started and installation began. At the completion of Installation, popup "Did you notice the Information Bar?", OK. On the Information Bar, choose “Always allow Pop-ups from this site”, click Register yet again. Click Grant Always on the Jinitiator Security Warning window. Jinitiator started for successful system access.

How do I get the New Jinitiator 1.3.1.28?
Users may login to the production instance of the Integrated System with Internet Explorer starting August 27, 2007, and be automatically prompted to download and install the required version, or ...

To install in advance of the go-live date,
click HERE to download a copy of Jinitiator 1.3.1.28 for connectivity to the upgraded Oracle applications.

In what instance can I test the connection with Jinitiator 1.3.1.28/ and what's the URL?
You can test the connection on a NON-production test instance (DEV2) at:

http://isp-dev.admin.virginia.edu:8062/oa_servlets/AppsLogin/ (VPN required)
User_id = LSP, password = welcome2u. Click Printer Setup Specialist, Register, Jinitiator will then start. See "Sample Scenario" above for dealing with ActiveX and pop-ups.

This site will be down on Wednesday mornings for patching; otherwise it is available 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

On installation, a Warning window states "unInstaller setup failed to initialize. You may not be able to uninstall this product." followed by Oracle Jinitiator Setup window "An error occurred during the move data process ... Component...File Group..."
The Windows login ID does not have full Administrator permissions, or equivalent. Re-logon to Windows as Administrator or equivalent.

What's the "Jinitiator Security Warning" window?
For Security, this version of Jinitiator has been signed by Oracle Corperation. Users must select Grant Always or Grant to accept the installation. If for some reason the certificate needs to be removed, go to Control Panel, Jinitiator 1.3.1.28, Certificates tab, highlight the certificate, click remove, close.

Is it compatible?
Jinitiator has been known to conflict with other Java intensive programs installed on the client PC. Example: the WinRunner product had to be upgraded to a newer version to co-exist.

Do I need to un-install old versions prior to 1.3.1.28?
No. The Jinitiators are mutually exclusive. Which Jinitiator is started is determined by the Oracle instance the user is logging into.

What about "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly."?
It is recommended to put the IS site in the Trusted Zone (click for directions).
Otherwise ...

Internet Explorer's ActiveX settings may prevent successful operation. To set this in Internet Explorer, first close all Windows applications. Then click on Tools, Internet Options, Security tab, Internet icon, Custom Level button. Set:

"Download signed ActiveX controls" to Enable or Prompt,

"Download UNsigned ActiveX controls" to Enable or Prompt,

"Run ActiveX controls and plugins" to Enable or Prompt.

Upon completion of the installation of Jinitiator, the security level for the Internet zone should be reset to the Default, which is Medium. On Internet Explorer menu bar, click Tools, Internet Options, Security tab, click Internet zone (the globe), Default Level button, Apply, OK.

Pop-up Blockers can prevent access:
Some pop-up blockers (like Windows XP SP2 or the Goggle Toolbar) have been known to prevent the Jinitiator Java window from starting, thereby denying access. Additionally, pop-up blockers have prevented users from being able to "View Output" and open certain forms.

Some pop-up blockers may be configurable to avoid this problem. For example, the Goggle toolbar can be configured to allow pop-ups from www.virginia.edu pages, yet continue to block pop-ups from other sites.

Click here for more information about the Windows XP Service Pack 2
(XPSP2) Pop-up blocker and how to configure it for IS compatibility.

FRM-92050: Failed to connect to the server..."
VPN may not be on. Usually a VPN/ firewall issue. Note: a user can normally logon and select a responsibility & task, all without VPN.

This connection may be blocked by a firewall such as Windows XP firewall. Please see SP2 FAQ for XP firewall details.

"FRM-92120: Registry file ... missing"
Error usually accompanied by a yellow bar "Warning: Applet Window" at the bottom of the window. Jinitiator will need to be reinstalled. See "Yellow bar" below.

"It just sits there."
The user is logged into Windows with "user" privileges, Jinitiator is not installed, then logs into the Integrated System, selects a responsibility, clicks a task: it just sits there and nothing happens.
Solution: Log into Windows with Administrator privileges (or equivalent), then proceed to login to the Integrated System. After Jinitiator has been completely installed and is accessed, the user can then re-login to Windows with user privileges.

The DOS window is frozen during Jinitiator installation.
Three possible solutions. First, never close the DOS window during Jinitiator installation (the installer should close the DOS window upon completion). If this occurs, reinstall Jinitiator. Secondly, ensure the "InstallShield Self-extracting EXE" prompt window is not hidden behind another window. This is likely if the last line in the DOS window is "extracting: seup.bat". Thirdly, read the DOS window - if its not the first time through, it may be prompting to replace Jinitiator13128.exe - type "y".

"16 bit MS-DOS subsystem error"
This is a Windows issue. The system is missing at least one of the three files: AUTOEXEC.NT, CONFIG.NT, or COMMAND.COM.

A fix is posted on ITC's Software Central site, or click here.

It doesn't work. (Installation problems part 1):
On occasion, to get the new Jinitiator to perform properly, it may require flushing the browsers' cache. In IE: click Tools, Internet Options, and Delete Files. Users may also need to Clear the JAR Cache (below).

Clear JAR Cache:
On occasion, it may be required to flush the JAR cache. (The JAR Cache is Jinitiator's temporary storage location.) In Control Panel, Jinitiator 1.3.1.28, Cache tab, click Clear JAR Cache button. By default, the actual location is C:\Documents and Settings\{your user ID}\Oracle Jar Cache. Because this is now stored in each user's Documents and Settings, different Windows users may experience unique Oracle issues.

It still doesn't work. (Installation problems part 2):
On rare occasions, to get the new Jinitiator to perform properly, it has required UNinstalling previous versions of Jinitiator (Control panel, Add/Remove Programs) in addition to deleting all files from C:\Program Files\Oracle. One must have administrator, or administrator equivalent, privileges for this process.

What does a Yellow bar "Warning: Applet Window" mean?
If a yellow bar containing the message "Applet Warning" appears along the border of any of the Java screens, there is a connectivity problem. Most commonly, users can't cut & paste between Oracle Applications and PC software, like spreadsheets.

Jinitiator should be removed and reinstalled.
Click here for instructions for Re-installing Jinitiator.

Lost mouse navigation:
A reported error was that while navigating around in Oracle Applications, the mouse disappeared, yet the control arrows still worked. The solution was to Clear JAR CAche.

Can't Export data?
The export function is usually prevented by restriction of the “Automatic prompting for file downloads” being disabled in Internet Options.

Quick workaround for XP users: To circumvent the block, hold down the Ctrl (control) key during the Export process. Specifically, after the File/ Export, a red progress indicator displays. Depress and hold the Ctrl key until the File Download dialog box is displayed.

Adding the IS to the Trusted Zone in Internet Options may be a better solution. Please see Trusted Zone below.

To enable “Automatic prompting for file downloads” only: Close all browsers. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, Security tab, Internet, Custom Level, scroll down to Downloads/ Automatic prompting for file downloads, click Enable, OK, Yes to changes, Apply, OK.

Automatically Export to Excel?
The Export downloads the file fnd_gfm.tsv. The File Download prompt has Save/ Cancel buttons only if the TSV file is not associated.

If that file type (TSV) is associated with Excel, the File Download dialog box prompts the user to Open/ Save/ Cancel. On that File Download dialog box, there's a check box for "Always ask ...". If that box is UNchecked and click Save, the subsequent exports will simply open in Excel automatically.
To un-do this and regain the Open/ Save/ Cancel box: start Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab, scroll down the Registered File Types list, click to highlight the TSV file type, Advanced button, uncheck and then check the "Confirm Open After Download" box, OK, Close.

If TSV was associated with another program, such as notepad, the association can be changed as follows. In Windows Explorer, navigate to a saved copy of fnd_gfm.tsv, right click, Open with, Choose From a List, choose Microsoft Excel, CHECK the "Always use box", OK.

Can't open attached files.
File Download needs to be enabled. In Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Security tab, click Internet zone, Custom Level button, set Automatic Prompting for File Downloads to Enabled.

Adding the IS to the Trusted Zone in Internet Options has proven to be a solution. Please see Trusted Zone below.

Adding IS to the Trusted Zone?
It is suggested that the IS server be added to the Trusted Zone in Internet Options. This allows for fewer restrictions on the IS site while retaining more restrictions for public Internet traffic. This helps resolve issues with Jinitiator installation, Export failure, and file attachment failure.

Add to Trusted Zone: You may need Administrator privileges on the PC to set Internet Options.
Close all browsers. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, Security tab, Trusted sites, Sites button, enter
https://is-sswa.admin.virginia.edu in the "Add this Web site" box, Add button. Should also check the "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" box. OK, Apply, OK.

What browsers should I use?
For Desktop and Browser Recommendations, please see:
http://www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem/gettingStarted/deskTopReq.html

What Operating Systems are certified?
Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 SP4+.
(Windows NT 4.0 SP5 - SP6a, Windows 98,Windows 95 have been De-supported).

MS Windows 2000/ XP "Power Users Group" or "Administrator" privileges are required for installing/upgrading all Oracle Jinitiator versions. "User" privileges should be sufficient to execute the program.

If you experience any difficulties, contact the ITC Help Desk at
924-3731.
