Jefferson in Another Light: Revealing the Man through Family Letters

What was Jefferson – father, grandfather, and friend – like in the last years of his life? What did a day in the life of Jefferson in retirement look like? During this period, Jefferson’s love of the written word was evidenced in an extensive correspondence with his own family. While he remained characteristically reserved in his own letters, even about some of the most tumultuous events of these years, his family’s correspondence is full of the details that reveal a far more vivid portrait of the man.
