This was the Commissions last plenary meeting of the academic year. Commission
Chair Brantly Womack began by thanking the Commission members for their work.
Statistics on International Students, Scholars and Students Abroad
Womack reviewed in more detail statistics he presented at the last Commission meeting
on international students, scholars and students abroad from the International Educational
Exchange (IIE). According to the IIE report, UVA ranks #155 in total foreign students, #55
in total foreign scholars, and #34 in total students abroad. according to the IIE report.
Meetings and Activities for Next Year
Womack reviewed the 1999-2000 Commission meeting schedule. Plenary meetings are
scheduled from 8 am - 9:30 am on the following dates: August 26, September 16, October 21,
November 18, December 16, January 20, February 17, March 16, April 20, and May 18.
Womack informed the Commission that the Fall 1999 Conference is making slow progress.
He stated that an open meeting for language faculty would take place in late October as a
follow-on to the Conference. This meeting would be coordinated with the language
departments 5-year planning initiatives.
Womack reviewed issues that needed to be worked out with Continuing Education in order
to get SCOLA reinstated. He also reviewed progress on the International Living and
Learning Center.
IC Brunch 16 May
Womack invited the members of the Commission to a brunch to be held at his house on
Sunday 16 May.
Draft International Mission Statement
Womack present a draft of an international mission statement which articulated the
purpose and goals of international activities at UVA. After discussion, the statement was
adopted by the Commission with the understanding that members could offer revisions to the
