The Office of the Vice President for Research will subsidize the cost of health insurance for postdoctoral research fellows.

Eligibility for health insurance will be determined by the Office of the Vice President for Research. For eligibility questions, email postdoc@virginia.edu.

For those fellows whose funding source does not provide monies for health insurance premiums, the department contributes $1000 and the VPR pays the remaining cost of a single coverage plan. For those fellows whose funding source does provide monies for health insurance premiums, the funding source will pay the premium to the extent allowed within the grant. There are three steps to follow in order to take advantage of this benefit and to begin insurance coverage.

  1. The Research Administrator must provide documentation of funding source and documentation of any funds that are designated to be used for health insurance purchase to the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. Please submit documentation to postdoc@virginia.edu.
  2. After receiving confirmation that they are eligible for health insurance from the Vice President for Research, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow must complete the necessary insurance enrollment forms, which are available from the Benefits Division (924-4392). These forms must be completed and received at the Benefits Division within 31 days of the beginning of the fellowship. Questions concerning how to add dependent and family coverage, cost for additional coverage, deductibles, etc., should be directed to the Benefits Division at benefits@virginia.edu.
  3. The Research Administrator must fill out an online form with account and enrollee information for the VPR office. Expect that charges will be made immediately following the appointment end date.
  4. The Research Administrator must notify postdoc@virginia.edu of any change in status (e.g. change in grant number, family status, termination, renewal).

Please Note:

Charges for health insurance will be made immediately following the appointment end date.
